Cooking Beans

Cooking beans is easier that you think and really tasty! There are so many benefits to buying raw beans from the bulk barrels and cooking them at home. Mainly you start to reduce waste by having less cans in the recycling and there are less undesired ingredients.

Cooking beans is pretty much the same for any kind of bean you could want. Just make sure the ratios of beans and water are correct and cook. If you want you can even mix the different beans together and cook at the same time.

Ingredients:

-2 cups dried beans

-water for soaking

-water for cooking

-2 tsp salt

Instructions:

  1. Put desired amount of beans in a large bowl, sort through them making sure to discard any stones or debris.

  2. Cover the beans in water, about 2-3 inches above where the beans end. Soak at room temperature for at least 8 hours, for best results soak over night. Drain and rinse well.

  3. After soaking, place beans in a large pot and cover with water, about 2-3 inched above the bean line. Bring the water to a boil over medium high heat.

  4. Reduce heat and simmer for about 30 minutes uncovered, skimming off any foam and adding salt.

  5. Continue to simmer until beans are soft, but not mushy. This can take between 1-2 hours, I try to check the beans every 30 minutes. If the beans ever look dry, add more water to the pot.

  6. When the bean are finished, either use them for another recipe, drain and eat immediately, or store them in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
